Frankie NewFoundland Moose 2010
After a frustrating first day shooting 175 yards at a bull moose with a nice rack and then searching the black spruce for hours but never finding the (less than I thought) wounded animal, two days later in the late afternoon Cliff saw this one coming down from the hills beyond. He was actually being called in by our real guide Gerald's electronic call several miles away at the "phone booth". We watched him for a while then got back in the boat and went to the other side of the lake. By the time I finished the mile long trek to where he was, Brian already had him in his sights. But he didn't want to take the shot (the animal was standing broadside making a butt shot difficult) so I found a large rock (ok a boulder) to steady myself and took him with two shots. Actually the first shot would have been sufficient, but not wanting a repeat of the other day, the second shot dropped him where you see.
It was getting dark so we cleaned and left the carcass overnight. While the others were out getting Erik's animal, Cliff "By the Jesus" and I lugged the meat back to camp. It took us two trips. Fortunately unlike Dennis Hump, carrying the meat was all downhill to the boat. That night Mona the camp cook prepared some of the ribs. A good meal was had by all. The next day there were only three ribs left and when Mona threw them out, Cliff "By the Holy Mackerel" dove in to the garbage, pulled them out and ate them!
When Guy our bush pilot was loading the meat and racks on the float plane, they handed him my small rack and asked if he had any room left (there was plenty of room). Guy responded to the obvious joke by saying, "well that will be the best eating one" and he was right!
